Boutique Hotel Melbourne
The phrase "if only the walls could speak" has never been used in a more appropriate circumstance than when delving into the colourful history of St Kilda’s infamous boutique Hotel Tolarno building in Melbourne.
The hallway and room walls are highlighted by original local artwork reminiscent of the days when it was owned and operated by renowned artist, Mirka Mora and her husband George, who lived and operated The Tolarno Gallery from this building prior to it becoming a boutique hotel.
Today the hotel awards art prizes to the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Tafe (RMIT) and the yearly winners are exhibited in the hotel foyer. Many of the paintings in the rooms have been purchased from the students and the balance from local artists.
Set in the heart of Melbourne St Kilda's cafe, bar and club precinct, the hotel is a short stroll to the beach, Acland Street galleries and the Sunday Esplanade Market. Right outside the hotel are trams offering direct access to Melbourne's CBD, the Casino, Southbank, National Gallery and Royal Botanic Gardens.
Boutique Hotel Tolarno's Melbourne restaurant is currently being renovated and we are hoping to be operational by spring.
Whether you are staying for business or pleasure you will be taken by Tolarno's modern day comforts and our informal and friendly service.

Boutique hotel
is a term originating in North America to describe intimate, usually luxurious or quirky hotel environments although you can now find boutique hotels in Melbourne, Sydney and most cities in Australia. Boutique hotel packages differentiate themselves from larger chain/branded hotels and motels by providing personalized level accommodation and services / facilities.
Sometimes known as "design hotels" or "lifestyle hotels," boutique hotels began in the 1980s in major cities like New York, London, and San Francisco. Very often it is the Morgans Hotel in Murray Hill of New York, that is awarded with the title of first boutique hotel in the world. It was opened by Ian Schrager in 1984 according to a design by Andrée Putman.
Typically boutique hotels are furnished in a themed, stylish and/or aspirational manner and the Hotel Tolarno is no different. Although usually considerably smaller than a mainstream hotel (often ranging from 3 to 100 guest rooms), boutique hotels in Melbourne can often have hundreds of rooms in major cities. Boutique Hotel packages in Melbourne are also becoming more common. Guest rooms and suites are fitted with telephony and Wi-Fi Internet, air-conditioning, honesty bars and often cable/pay TV. Guest services are attended to by 24 hour hotel staff. Many boutique hotels have on-site dining facilities, and the majority offer bars and lounges which may also be open to the general public.
Despite this definition, the popularity of the boutique hotel term in melbourne and elsewhere has lead to some confusion about the term. Boutique hotels have typically been unique properties operated by individials or companies with a small collection and the Tolarno Boutique hotel in Melbourne is no different. However, their successes have prompted established multi-national hotel companies to establish their own brands. The most notable is Starwood Hotels and Resorts' W Hotels.
Currently, there is one publication dedicated to the boutique hotel, boutique DESIGN magazine, which is published quarterly. Boutique hotel resources are more commonly available online. One such site dedicated to boutique hotels is Tablet Hotels. There are also a number of stylized design and coffee table books highlighting various properties throughout the world.
